Gwar Puts Joan Rivers in Her Place

I can tell at the start of the segment that Joan Rivers wanted Gwar on her show to spew some moral outrage. And she totally failed. Part of her failure is that Gwar were so articulate and funny, she simply did not know how to respond.

She wanted to imply that, when people go to Gwar's show, they'd feel the sudden urge to commit acts of violence. Gwar's simple response was that such individuals should join the police force or army. Touche. If there are such pliable people, society certainly would have no problem with them entering occupations where violence is a requirement.

The brilliance of this interview is that Gwar shows clearly and succinctly the difference between fantasy and reality. Fantasy is where you dress up in outlandish Halloween costumes and have a good night out. Reality, on the other hand, is a moment you can't take back — a bludgeoned head, a tremourous hand, and blood that is shed. The differences between fantasy and reality are gaping.

I doubt Joan Rivers would be laughing if she believed Gwar fans were incapable of understanding the difference between fantasy and reality.

Intoxicated "Macho Man" Randy Savage Interview

Believe me, I have no idea what Randy Savage is talking about, but it sure as hell seems to me that he is either high or portraying himself as high. Intoxication aside, this interview confirms a crawling suspicion I've had for a long time: wrestling was so much better in the 80s than it is now. Case in point, all he's doing is spouting off coked out gibberish, but he's doing so with such charisma.

"Because I can't sing and I can't dance, but I can make romance!" Damn, that hits the spot. That Macho Man is so smooth, you don't even care that hes not really saying anything.

In the 80s they could get away with that. All you had to do was hear Randy Savage go "OOOOH YEAAAH!" and you'd be instantly hooked. The wrestling didn't matter. That was secondary. The real reason to tune into the WWF was to hear a catch-phrase delivered right.

Man, I miss those days.

The Telephone Booth in the Middle of Nowhere

15 miles off the interstate in the midst of the Mojave Desert sat a telephone booth. As the story goes, this phone booth was put there during World War II for use of a nearby mine that ceased operations in the 1960s. For some odd reason, it has not been decommissioned until recently. The obvious question, of course, is "Why did anyone use it?" And if so, what kind of person would use it?


That's what Doc wanted to find out. He's conducted seven interviews with folks who have answered that phone. Here, for all to see, is a collection of transcripts of those interviews. In this, an array of interesting personalities come forth.

In the end, this isn't so much about the phone booth per se but the folks who feel the need to use the phone booth. There's nothing like it.
