Zentai -- A Radical Fashion Statement

The practical use of a zentai suit is for a puppeteer, actor, or cosplayer to go about their work unnoticed. Literally, they are supposed to blend into the background. You know that nifty special effect in a movie that made you say "Gee wiz?" Done by a person in a Zentai suit who was later edited out by a computer.

Which is interesting because zentai is being used more and more as recreational clothing to lounge around in — especially in Japan. And not just as fetish wear either. Zentai suits are showing up in dance clubs, meditation studios, and shopping malls. A subculture is beginning to take shape around zentai.

For the most part, this has not yet touched the Wester world, but The Zentai Project is pioneering its recreational use.

We in The Zentai Project make occasional 'walkabouts' - trips with one or more people wearing zentai out in public places, and sometimes someone to take pictures. Walkabouts have happened all around the world, as you can see from the pictures in the gallery.

And I'm all for it. This is the perfect avenue to make a bold fashion statement but preserve one's anonymity. One can say the person attracted to zentai exhibits signs of attention whoredom. I disagree. The attention is on the suit and perhaps the body the suit is accentuating. There is no way, though, to identify the person inhabiting the suit.

Frankly, I find this kind of refreshing.

The Mentally Handicapped Sure Know How to Rock and Roll!

This reminds me of that South Park episode where Timmy joins a band and becomes a rock and roll superstar. Just like in that South Park episode, people will doubtlessly believe that me posting this video is cruel. To that, I say the great thing about these guys is they are in your face, doing their own thing, and clearly enjoying it.

I mean, who knew this whole crowd would get so into hardcore punk? This is much like the scenes I saw when I was a teenager going to all ages shows. The difference, of course, is that the mentally handicapped — in general — don't care about ideological purity and "who sold out". To them, it's all about the rock and roll. Even the lady in the wheelchair is getting into it.

Actually, I think it would be cool if more mentally handicapped went to concerts. I think it would be more fun. Maybe their clear enjoyment would rub off on some of the more stoic folks in the audience.

Oscar Wilde Action Figure

I'm sure Oscar Wilde would have found this to be a compliment as he was well known for his appreciation of the absurd. And really, what is more decadent than an action figure? Think beyond it as a child's plaything. The adult who owns an action figure does so out of vanity. It is not to be handled, or thrown about, or left to the elements. It is to be kept in the original packaging, put on display, and spoken about in hushed tones.

In other words, the action figure would find its place amongst Wilde's peacocks feathers, sunflowers, and blue china. To the grown man, it is purely an aesthetic object. Hence, this action figure is not ironic at all.

And what about the action figure itself? The manufacturer describes it thusly:

Hats Made of Meat

I guess today's theme is "meat". It's not as though I went out of my way to find things related to meat. I guess you could say the meat found me.

Meat as a subject is funny. It's not just because meat is delicious but because so many people want to prevent its deliciousness. They will douse you with red paint, write pages upon pages of treatises, and scream bloody murder just because they can't stand the thought that meat is, by its nature, delicious.

Well, why stop at deliciousness? Why not be fashionable too? It looks like Hats of Meat has you covered. From the Base-bull hat, to the rib hood, to the ground chuck. The Condiment Packet Gallery

Some guy has dedicated his time creating his own personal ode to condiment packets. And one can tell he is dedicated. Thus far, he has 724 packet pictures. He divides it by sauce and brand types too if you want to be really precise in your search. As a special feature, you can also view Taco Bell's special sayings on their condiment packets.

Okay, let's say hypothetically that all of this does not meet your criteria for dedication. To that, I say look at how he prepares his collection.

I carefully remove the contents of my packets by slicing open the back along the bottom seam with a sharp blade. I rinse the inside of the packets thoroughly to ensure all traces of sauce are expelled. I then wait until the packets are completely dry before I place them in baseball card cases to preserve them cleanly and safely for many generations.

Circus-Inspired Art

Johnny Meah is the last of his kind. Since the 1950s, he has created banners, posters, and various other promotional materials for circuses. The artwork was created to be eye-catching with his cartoonish depiction of performers, the bright contrasting colours, and the inviting taglines. It might seem all too surreal if it wasn't business as usual for carnival promoters.

The above picture represents Pete Terhune who, in his 70s, still seems to be performing. Not only does he exhibit awesome feats of strength, but also juggles and eats fire. He's been an entertainer for 50 years.

Johnny Meah's artwork is fascinating and worth a gander. I recommend that you make your way on down to his website Czar of Bizarre and have yourself a look. It's full on circus fun.

Sculpture Out of Construction Paper

This piece is called "Assorted Explosion" and was made by Jen Stark. From what I gather, it is simply layers of multi-coloured constuction paper cut very strategically. How simple yet complex.

I admire this piece for the sheer hack of the problem. Jen took something quite simple, a stack of construction paper, and turned it into something neat. How I lust over getting the instructions on how to do it and implementing it. I'm sure, thugh, that she does not want to give away her secret and will thus keep towards gawking in admiration.

A Toilet in the Amazon Jungle

Libertad, a village in Ecuador, is the home of 90 Amazonian Indians. Every last Indian uses this toilet. This small toilet is simply a rectangular hole in a concrete floor. It's depth is 15 feet. Those strands of green material, I'm hoping, are leaves to wipe away the fecal matter.

One thing must be said about the Amazonian Indians: if they can brave this toilet, they can brave any wild thing that can come at them in the jungle. Case closed.

Sushi-Scented Cologne Spray

Demeter Fragrance Library, a company that specializes in "everyday" scents, has released a sushi-scented cologne spray. And what, pray tell, are the components of a sushi sent? Well, mostly it smells of fish. Along with that, there's a mix of sticky white rice, seaweed, with just a little bit of lemon and ginger. No word on if they are planning a wasabi edition.

You probably like the scent of sushi, but perhaps you are worried that others may not share your sensual preferences. Be not worried. Demeter tends to create scents that only last a short time. Thus, if you are at your local Japanese restaurant, and you want to smell more like your atmosphere, go right ahead. Once you come back from your lunch break and return to your office, you may not be as aromatic. See, it's a win-win proposition.

The price of this sushi fragrance for a 1oz. bottle is $14.99. Hence, it is not as expensive as other eau de toilettes. Certainly, sushi may not be your thing but I'm sure there's some other fragrance that can captivate you. For instance, Plah-Doh.

Hella - Republic of Rough and Ready

If you like your math rock rough and tumble, I recommend Hella. They are a blitzkrieg of electric guitar and drums that can turn on a dime. This is music to listen to while trying to solve algebraic equations.

Still, you don't have to be a math geek to appreciate music. Headbangers are welcome too. Just don't get yourself whiplash.

Art of Cloud

Vincent Chow has posted some magnificent cloud art on his blog. Apparently, this originated from another site, but he has not supplied the link.

The concept is simple. Take a picture of a cloud, try to look for the hidden picture within the outlines, the draw accordingly. You will probably agree that the result is quite unique.

Unlike most post rock outfits, Apostle of Hustle doesn't get enmired in theory. Instead, they delve into the sentimental and whimsical. The result is profoundly delicate but easygoing. This is the kind of music you want to listen to winter and summertime. Sometimes music just has to be fun.

Thankfully, Apostle of Hustle is one of those bands that has not forgot the meaning of fun.

The Slits - Instant Hit

My Chemical Romance does not represent the true spirit of punk. That much is obvious. Neither is Epitaph Records indicative of the true spirit of punk Both the mall punk and the gutter punk: neither of these show light on what punk was truly about.

Punk was about experimentation. The Clash were not afraid to get down and funky. Johnny Rotten, as I previously noted, went on to create some of the most innovative rock music ever. The Talking Heads got their start from CBGBs (R.I.P.).

The most innovative punk bands were the girl punk bands. Lilliput (a.k.a. Kleenex) was just as minimalistic as Wire, but were not afraid to be whimsical. The Raincoats utilized a whole stream of sound that had hitherto been ignored by everyone else. Most innovatively, the Slits discovered the principle of fun.

And the Slits were definitely fun. This song forces you to tap your foot. The video you are about to watch is basically young women off on some merry adventures. Funny enough, I can relate to this a heck of a lot better than the Britneys of the world. This is because I know these girls. I meet them everyday. Perhaps one day, some fun-loving girls will pick up their instruments — and, in the process, reignite the spirit of punk.

Why Heavy Metal is Great Children's Music

The Thunderlords bill themselves as the first heavy metal band for kids. Actually, I believe that honour goes to Kids Can Rock and Roll. I should know, as i was one of the unfortunate kids who happened to watch them every weekend. Thus, I will amend this inaccuracy by saying that The Thunderlords are the world's first good heavy metal band, and this little advert does not do them justice.

What would happen if The Wiggles met Rob Zombie backstage at a Gwar concert and decided to form a band together? I'm not really sure, but I'd bet they would sound a lot like The Thunderlords! The Thunderlords play loud, heavy music with goofy, fun lyrics that everyone can enjoy. Except those looking for some peace and quiet. Warning: This is not the album you want to play at naptime

Yes, the description of The Wiggles meeting Rob Zombie at a Gwar concert is accurate. What they do not mention is just so damn awesome they actually are. This is the kind of music I wish was made when I was a kid. Thankfully, they have a music video for your own perusal.

Shopping Cart Art

With abandoned shopping carts littering urban rivers and canals, what are we to do with them? Drew Gardner has a solution. He has decided to create wire sculptures of water wirelife out of them.

The osprey is the perfect fisherman, using its feet and sharp eyesight to hunt. This metal version, however, should perhaps keep clear of open water.

Apart from the ecological commentary, this "shopping cart art" is plain neat. Taking a familiar object of consumer spending and reformatting it as a sculpture is not just about creating a "message" — it is fun! Admit it to yourself: you want to know how he did. You want to know how he mutated a shopping cart into an osprey.

In my opinion, even if you do not know where these shopping carts came from, the art still speaks for itself.
