The Drinky Crow Show is Quite Intense

This is the first thirty seconds of the Drinky Crow Show, which aired its pilot on Adult Swim last May. I believe this opening sequence represents everything good about the show — namely, that Drinky is a pathological mess who, when he is not busy getting drunk, is trying commit suicide. It is also worth mentioning that the theme song was composed and performed by They Might Be Giants.

The premise can be funny, if only the hyperactivity was notched up a bit. The pilot was equal parts inspired but staid. Too much focus is on Uncle Gabby, and not enough focus is on Drinky's violent tendencies. Still, what this pilot excels at is genuinely "WTF" moments that gross you out so much, you must laugh.

Further thoughts: this could be a great show. Hopefully, the Cartoon Network sees the promise here, and produces more episodes. The Simpsons, you will recall, took years to get where it is today. There is not enough absurdist humour in cartoons today (with the exception of South Park), and hopefully the Drinky Crow Show will pile it on.

Pop Songs Sung by Fred Phelps' Wesboro Baptist Church

There's no way Fred Phelps can be real. These songs are just too funny. This has to be some sort of performance art that has kept up its facade all these years. It's too ridiculous for people to take seriously — no less a bunch of middle-aged choirwomen to take seriously.

But serious these people really are. They sing these songs with no sense of irony. Indeed it is ironic that they use the sounds of sin to preach against "sin". I present to you some choice tunes brought to you by that wonderful source of comedy, Fred Phelps — a master, if there ever was one, of "hamming it up".

My favourite song of the three I've shared with you is "We Have a Message". There's just something about hearing "Stompity-stomp-stomp", "Brokeback Mountain", and "BOOOOOOM!" sung by prim Church ladies.

Many folks wonder what would have happened to Hitler if he was accepted into art school. Well, I am one to wonder what would have happened to Fred Phelps if he made an early career switch into sketch comedy. I'm sure Monty Python would have scored big to have him as a cast member.

Again, after hearing these songs, it's hard for me to believe these guys can be serious. Which is why this really is screwed up.

Gung-ho for the Chung

This painting is called Major Inconvenience!! and was created by David Chung, a.k.a The Chung. It is a serious art piece as noted by the fact it was created with acrylic on wood. Sad to say, it is already sold.

I say it is sad because this really is something I myself would buy. The Chung seems to have the ability to meld together "cute" and "absurd" in one unbelievable package. It is cartoonish, but not in the awful manga style that everybody seems so enthused about but which seems so uniform. Rather, what makes cartoons so exciting to me is that you can do things one cannot with flesh and bone. This artwork is a vivid example of what I mean.

Then again, what else can I expect from a crippled Dance Dance Revolution superstar?
