Cars, diners, and jukeboxes all have their place in Americana. Pinballs have a much more nebulous position. Perhaps this is because pinballs are perceived as a modern invention. The truth is that they've been in existence before video games. Thankfully, Kevin Tiell has decided to immortalize pinball machines with his beautiful photographic work.
Hoping to showcase the beauty and design of pinball games, these images attempt to reveal the environment that has captivated players for decades. Color and composition were my initial motivations for the series, while capturing the reflections of a metal sphere posed an interesting technical challenge. The photographs in this collection are not as much a reflection of my efforts as they are of the people who influence and motivate me.
Of course, pinball machines occupy the same place in my heart as the Atari 2600 and the Nintendo Entertainment System. However, I've always considered the pinball machine to be a much more beautiful device than either of the two prior mentioned systems. A pinball is a very real thing, as opposed to the more ethereal properties of a game system. I love the clang and the knock-a-bouts of how it works.
I am quite happy the photographs were made.
