Michael Wolf has photographed a collection of bastard chairs — chairs that have long ago lost their lustre, should have been recycled, but for some reason or another, still have found life in a forgotten alleyway. If chairs were Vietnam vets, these would be it. In fact, if I were to pick a more colourful expression, I'd call these chairs "war amputees who have fallen on hard times".What makes these chairs so interesting is the story they have to tell. Take a look at the one above. What does the graffiti mean? Why were its legs pulled off? Why would anyone do such a thing? Unfortunately, we do not have answers for such questions.
Bastard chairs, at least, offer a welcome antidote to our current Ikea hegemony.
